The mystery of Imjarvi
When the light from the vehicle disappeared, the two men could see a small creature with a cap and a box in his hands. For Esko Viljo and Aarno Heinonen, meeting in the forest would change their lives. The experience has yet to receive a secure explanation.

By Bjorn Hogman and Clas Svahn

It was Wednesday, January 7, 1970 and the time was 16.45 in the village of Imjarvi, 16 kilometers north-northeast of Heinola city in southern Finland. Forest worker Aarno Heinonen, age 36, and farmer Esko Viljo, age 38, were out on a skiing trip. Both had been active skiers and guides.

The two men arrived with good speed carrying a small slope and drove towards a glade, where they used to take a break. It was dusk with some single stars and thin clouds, 17 degrees cold and windy. They had traveled the road several times before.

20200622_trn_finn_2.jpg

When they both stood and rested for about five minutes, they heard a buzzing sound. They looked up and saw a very bright light hazard across the sky. It looked like a brilliant cloud coming from the north and made a wide arc to approach from the south, while sinking ever lower. The buzzing sound was heard louder and louder. When the cloud stopped, they could see it rotating. They noticed that it was like a red-gray fog, which seemed to pulse with a strange light, at the same time as brooms of smoke appeared from its top.

20200622_trn_finn_3.jpg

The men stood still and stared upward. None of them said anything. When the cloud came down to a height of 15 meters above the ground, they saw what was in it, a round, metal-shining craft, about three meters in diameter. On its underside were three equal hemispheres and in the center of the bottom of the vessel a tube protruded, about 2 inches long and 25 centimeters in diameter.

For a moment the object hovered still, while the buzzing continued. As it then slowly descended toward the two men, the buzzing increased in strength. At the same time, the red-gray cloud thinned out more and more, and when the round object was at three meters in height, it stopped, and the buzzing ceased.

Heinonen later told me that the object was now so close that he could almost have touched it with the ski stick.

20200622_trn_finn_4.jpg

Suddenly a strong beam of light came out of the tube on the underside. The jet moved around a couple of times before it stopped and a bright glowing circle appeared on the snow. The circle was about a meter in diameter, and around it was a black border, about a centimeter wide. The men stood perfectly still at about a meter's distance while a light, red-gray mist descended over the place.

After a few seconds the light contracted and rose upwards to about half a meter above the ground. When the light went out, they saw a disc about 15 inches in diameter. The disc stood first, then made a jerk of 10?15 centimeters at the same time as a ticking sound was heard. Then it quickly disappeared into the tube of the vehicle.

20200622_trn_finn_5.jpg

Heinonen: “Suddenly I felt someone grabbing my waist from behind and pulling back. I think I took a step back, and in the same second I saw the creature! It was in the middle of the light booth with a black box in his hands. From a round opening in the box a yellow light pulsed. The goods were about 90 centimeters long and very lean with narrow arms and legs. The face was waxy. I did not notice any eyes, but the nose was very strange. It was just like a hook. The ears were very small and lay close to the head. The item wore some kind of tight overall of light green material. On his feet, he wore boots of darker green, which extended all the way up to his knees, and on his hands white collar gloves, which extended to his elbows. Fingers curved like claws around the black box. "

Esko Viljo described the creature as follows: “I saw it too. The creature stood in the midst of the bright light, shining as if it had been of phosphorus. The face was very pale and the shoulders very thin and sloping, arms narrow like a toddler. I didn't think about the dress, just saw it was greenish. On his head sat a pointed helmet and gleamed like metal. The creature was at most one meter long and very narrow. "

As the men stared at the creature, this turned half a lap and directed the opening in the box towards Heinonen.

20200622_trn_finn_6.jpg

The pulsating light from the box was very bright, almost dazzling. As the creature remained in the beacon, a thick, red-gray mist descended from the craft, and large sparks began to emerge from the luminous circle on the snow. The sparks were like luminous rods, about a decimeter long, red, green and violet. They floated very slowly outwards in long arches. The sparks hit the two men, but without burning them. The fog became more and more sealed, and Heinonen and Viljo finally couldn't see each other even though they only had a few meters between them. Finally, the fog became so dense that the creature could not be seen either. Then they had seen the creature for 15 to 20 seconds at a distance of three meters.

Viljo: “Suddenly the light cone on the ground melted, floated upwards like a roaring flame and sucked into the opening of the vehicle. Then it was as if the dim curtain had been torn down and the air above us was empty. "

The two men remained at the scene for perhaps three minutes.

Heinonen: "We didn't get scared, we didn't talk, we didn't do anything."

Two minutes after the fog was scattered, he felt his right side become numb, and when he took a step forward with the ski, his right foot did not bear. He sank into the snow.

“I had the right side closest to the light. It stung and ached in the entire right leg, and the foot was numb as if it were asleep. I couldn't get up even though I tried again and again. "

Heinonen had to leave the skis and be helped home by Viljo. It took an hour for them to move the two miles back. When Heinonen arrived at the cottage he felt ill, his back ached and every joint sore. He had a headache, and after a while he had to vomit. The vomiting then continued for about a month and a half.

When Heinonen paused a moment later, the urine was black as coffee. (This continued for a couple of weeks.) He also had difficulty breathing.

20200622_trn_finn_7.jpg

At 8 pm the same day, Heinonen went with a neighbor to Heinola city laser, where Dr. Pauli Kajanoja examined him. There, Heinonen complained about pain in the joints, nausea and headache. Doctor Kajanoja measured blood pressure and found that it was far below normal, suggesting a real shock. Heinonen seemed at the same time absent and received some sleeping pills.

The next day, Heinonen again visited Pauli Kajanoja, who then said that the disease symptoms would be gone within ten days. He was prescribed sedative medicine. However, the symptoms continued, the joints ached, and he had balance problems, froze a lot but was fever-free.

20200622_trn_finn_8.jpg

On January 14 he visited the doctor again, who then prescribed blood circulation medicine. The symptoms continued, and Heinonen was unable to perform any work. In mid-May 1970, he wrote in a letter to the now defunct Gicoff NGO whose archive is today located at AFU:

"I'm still sick. Has pain in the head and neck. My stomach and back are also sore. Right hand feels very heavy, as well as numbness. I can't work with any heavy work. I got so bad then last winter and have not gotten better. The doctor here in Heinola can't help me, or the state is so poor that it can't help us. I have applied for sickness benefit but receive nothing. I think they are the ones to pay, because I don't know why I got sick. I've been to the place where the phenomenon happened. After that I became even sicker. "

20200622_trn_finn_9.jpg

Heinonen has occasionally suffered memory loss, which has resulted in unexplained gaps in his memory. The very event in the forest glade, as he now sees it, was not fully understood right away.

At the beginning of June 1970 he was still very weak. He had eaten very little all the time. Before January 7, he had an excellent condition after many miles of skiing. Now he was tired with the least effort.

Viljo did not feel ill immediately after the incident but only an hour afterwards, when his face swelled and turned red, and according to other persons, his gait was unbalanced.

At Doctor Kajanoja, he, just like Heinonen, also received sleeping pills.

20200622_trn_finn_10.jpg

The next morning he had a hard time with the balance and felt light, especially in the legs. The hands and upper body then turned red.

On January 9, Viljo visited the doctor again. He believed that both men had suffered an electric explosion. He prescribed sedative medicine. Viljo had a headache a few days later.

On January 12, Viljo was at an ophthalmologist in Lahti due to his sensitivity to bright light. His eyelids swelled on him. The doctor gave him eye drops.

On January 14, Viljo visited the doctor in Heinola. He received medicine for the circulation.

On January 17, he was examined by the same doctor, with a complete blood test. No error was found.

In a letter to Gicoff in mid-April 1970, Viljo wrote about nerve disorders or circulatory disorders in the left foot. In connection with a sauna, the skin became abnormally red. He has also had tingling in the skin.

In mid-May, Viljo wrote again: “There have been a few more people in the place where it happened, and they have felt bad a few days afterwards. Could it be someone's infection? "

Doctor Kajanoja, who has examined the two men, says:

- I think they had a real shock. Viljo was very red in the face and seemed a little swollen. Both seemed at the same time absent. They talked eagerly, a little incoherently. In case of a strong shock, the blood pressure drops significantly, which it did in this case. I couldn't find any clinical error on Heinonen. He must have felt bad, but it may have been because his stomach reacted when he was frightened. The symptoms he described were very similar to those of radioactive radiation. Unfortunately I did not have any radiation meter on hand. However, radioactive radiation damage is rarely found after a few hours. The colored urine seems inexplicable. It may be a matter of blood in the urine. It was impossible to make a safe diagnosis, and therefore I could not prescribe any special medicine.

20200622_trn_finn_11.jpg

When a reporting team visited the site of the incident in early June 1970 with Heinonen and Viljo, it seemed as if something was still in place that could affect people. After a while, the hands of Heinonen, Viljos and an interpreter turned red. Heinonen had to leave the place and sit a while away, due to strong headaches.

On the same day as the incident in the forest glade, on January 7, 1970, and at the same time of day, two other people saw a strange, bright light in the sky. The farmer's wife Ena Siitari in Paistjarvi village, about 15 kilometers from Imjarvi, was on her way to the barn when she saw a strange light away from Imjarvi.

In Paaso village, about a mile north, the son of a house had gone out to pick up firewood when he discovered a light phenomenon. The time then was 16.45.

20200622_trn_finn_12.jpg

In 1969, the year before, Matti Kontulainen, aged 16, from Imjarvi , happened upon a strange event just a hundred meters from the glade where Viljo and Heinonen saw the craft and the creature:

“It was about eleven in the evening. In February, 1969, it was a cloudy winter evening. I came skiing through the woods after visiting a friend. I was on my way home. It was quite dark, but suddenly the forest was lit up by a very strong glow that projected tightly over the tree tops, so low that I threw myself into the snow. It was like a huge welding flame, and it disappeared in a few moments. I have never before seen such a bright light. It was like looking into the sun. It came from the south and went straight north. I didn't hear the slightest noise, so I'm sure it wasn't an airplane. "

Farmer Matti Haapaniemi, 46 in 1970, is the closest neighbor to Heinonen. He is a member of the municipal council of Heinola county council. He says: “Many in the neighborhood have laughed at this story, but I don't think it's anything to joke about. I have known both Aarno and Esko since they were little boys. I trust them. Both are calm and sensible men and also full-fledged tourists. I'm sure their story is true. "

Matti Tuuri, professor of electrophysics at the University of Helsinki, has taken note of the facts in the Heinonen-Viljo case, saying:

- It is not excluded that Heinonen's and Vijo's injuries were caused by electrical radiation. Both say the light was dazzling and white, and then it may not have been ultraviolet radiation, which is always bluish. It also does not penetrate clothing. If the radiation has really gone through Heinonen's clothes, it must have been even more short-wave radiation, such as x-rays. It also causes symptoms ssuch as Heinonen in overdose.

Matti Tuuri continues:

20200622_trn_finn_13.jpg

- These light phenomena have been seen by so many that you can no longer deny them. They have been seen in the sky in warmer countries, such as Brazil. It is conceivable that these phenomena move along the earth's magnetic lines and come in a north-south direction or vice versa, like the light in Heinola. Much is still unexplored in electrophysics. You just have to mention the bullet flash. We know it exists, but no one has yet come up with a physical law that would prove its existence. According to all the laws of physics, the ball flash should explode immediately, but it does not. The event outside Heinola is hardly a common electrical phenomenon.

Regarding the newspapers' claims that this light phenomenon would be an electrical discharge into the atmosphere, Gicoff wrote to Uppsala University, the Institute for High Voltage Research, and received the following answer: "As far as we can judge, the phenomenon has no connection to thunder or air electricity of a known kind."

At Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Nuclear Chemistry, an analysis of soil samples from the site was conducted to determine any radioactivity. But without seeing any signs of radioactivity:

1. EMI Monitor.

No measurable beta (test done on open soil).

No measurable alpha (test done on open ground).

2. Methane Proportional Counter (2 Pi counters). Earth covered with foil (1 mm / cm2). After 5 min. 206 heart rate. Backgrounds are 203 pulses in 5 min. The samples are negative. Also, samples of melted snow from the site negatively.

The event in Imjarvi , despite the fact that almost 50 years have passed since it took place, is still without explanation. Today both Heinonen and Viljo are dead.

Footnote: The incident in Imjarvi came to Gicoff's knowledge through a note on the case in the Gothenburg Journal which caused Gicoff to contact the witnesses through the Hufvudstadsbladet in Helsinki and leisure agencies in Heinola, which translated the questions into Finnish and forwarded the answers to Gicoff. Thereafter, correspondence was exchanged with the two men with the aid of an interpreter, and together five letters were obtained. A Swedish weekly journalist has, following tips from Gicoff, made a trip to Finland in the company of a photographer. The journalist's article and tape recordings have then been at Gicoff's disposal.

pic trn_fin_2

pic trn_fin_3

pic trn_fin_4

pic trn_fin_5

Interestingly, when Heinonen tried to photograph the female
humanoid alien, both she and his camera disappeared! When Viljo
tried to take a photograph of a mysterious light, the camera was
allegedly knocked out of his hand and the film was burned into
ashes, Is this a convenient cover story, or does it lend support to

Throughout the next two years, Heinonen claimed to have had
23 UFO sightings and, in August, 1972, was directed by “a loud
female voice” to go to a secluded location for a rendezvous with
two aliens. This kind of telepathic command-to go to a particular
location to encounter a UFO craft and/or aliens-is fairly common
among contactees. This suggests some kind of telepathic
communication from aliens to humans.

Heinonen went to the location and saw what he called “an
extremely beautiful” space woman. She was about 5 feet tall, wore
a yellow pantsuit that rustled when she walked, and seemed to
float or hover as opposed to walking like a human. She also had
shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. She held a silvery ball in her
hands with three antennae pointed directly at Heinonen. A male
alien could be seen standing about 200 feet behind the female.

The female alien greeted Heinonen by saying “Hyvaa paivaa?,”
which is Finnish for “Good day!” or “How are you?” She further
advised him that she came from a green and pleasant land, that

she was 180 years old even though she only looked about 20 years
old, and that three different species of humanoid aliens had visited
Heinonen’s home town of Imjarvi, indicating that some were
smaller than her, some were her size, and some were giant-size at
about 6 feet, 6 inches tall. The floating female humanoid alien also
told Heinonen that the last visitation in 1970 with his friend Viljo
had actually lasted three minutes and not just a few seconds as
they had both thought.

This last comment suggests that she was present or had
firsthand knowledge of the first encounter with the tiny, hooked-
nose alien. This, in turn, suggests to me that the little black box
carried by the tiny alien may have been derived from a similar
kind of technology to the silvery ball held by the female alien. As is
clear from the many accounts of alien encounters, many aliens
carry little devices in their hands. The first device was obviously
more harmful and possibly invasive. The fact that Heinonen was
able to “hear” telepathic commands after that first encounter
suggests the aliens may have been able to either insert an implant
or mentally condition him to receive their telepathic voices during
the confusing and numbing event.

The fact that this female alien pointed the antennae of the
silvery device at Heinonen while speaking to him suggests that she
may have used it as a type of linguistic translating piece of
equipment. If it was true, as she said, that three different species of
aliens were visiting Finland, it would not be surprising that they
would need to learn Finnish in order to communicate with the
locals.

Interestingly, when Heinonen tried to photograph the female
humanoid alien, both she and his camera disappeared! When Viljo
tried to take a photograph of a mysterious light, the camera was
allegedly knocked out of his hand and the film was burned into
ashes, Is this a convenient cover story, or does it lend support to

evidence that people are often placed in a trance-like state so it
doesn’t occur to them to take photographic evidence of a UFO or
alien contact event?
